British food is often knocked as being bland. I actually really like it especially when we are talking about things like bangers, black pudding, rashers and these Scotch Eggs. They make a great breakfast or snack that can be made days in advance. You can really do your favorite sausage with this but pork breakfast sausages are traditional and are a bit easier to mold onto the eggs. If you don’t have enough sausage on the egg it will pull off the egg, so make sure that you have enough sausage.

There are so many things that stress and worry new parents. The feeding of their baby is one of the most common concerns that I get asked. Specifically, what and when to start feeding baby solids? Not to add more pressure to the new parent but this really is one of the more important decisions you can make for your child’s health and for your sanity over the next few years.
The right food choices at this time can lead to a healthy gut microbiome and balanced blood sugar that will help curb the ups and downs of the toddler temper tantrums. The problem is that this really is one of those topics that you can get lost in because there are so many theories about what is right and why. When to start?
This one is pretty simple. You should start at about 4 months but all children are a bit different. The exact time is determined by the size and maturity of the child. A physical sign they are ready to start eating/supplementing solid foods away from breast milk is when they stop pushing...
I was on a mission last Saturday to buy a vegetable that I had either never used or that cooking it had intimidated me in the past. I had never used bok choy before just because I didn’t know what to do with it. So I thought bok choy or Chinese cabbage would expand my culinary horizons. I decided to go with a garlic ginger bok choy stir fry or more accurately sauté. I didn't know what it would taste like so I thought it would be best to hedge my bets and go with something that I knew I would like, the “Asian beef.” This meal turned out great! I recommend letting the beef marinade all day or better yet do it the night before you plan on cooking it. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
Ingredients:
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked, “I am thinking about doing a vegetarian diet. What do you think?” I usually just shake my head and ask them why they are going to cut out the best source of essential fats, high-density nutrients, and complete proteins?
Honestly, I can see why some people would want to avoid animal proteins. Whether it be for environmental or ethical reasons, the animal feeding operations can be pretty grotesque. You can look at beef feedlots, chicken farms, and fish farms, and you'll find food operations that do horrible things to the environment and the foods that we eventually consume.
However, I would propose that it would be a much better ethical and moral statement to vote with your wallet and purchase the healthier alternatives of pastured meats and sustainably caught fish. There are still vegetarian proponents who argue that even these sustainable pasture-based farms are doing irreparable damage to the environment. I will point those pe...
My love affair with coconut amino’s continues! They haven’t let me down yet. This is honestly on of the best sauces that I have ever made or ever eaten. Last week I went to a Seafood 101 cooking class at Central Market. This is a paleo-fried recipe that they made with tuna. The Ginger Shiitake Mahi Mahi is such a great meal. It was quick, easy, and honestly one of the tastiest I have ever made. I have never cooked with shiitake mushrooms before, but I have to say that I am going to start looking for more recipes with them. They have a tremendous health benefit with significant amounts of B vitamins and a decent source of calcium. Plus they're great for the immune system, and they had a great flavor, especially with the aminos. Hopefully, you enjoy this as much as we did. Just a fair warning there may not be any leftovers at the end of the meal.
I was recently asked this question, and I have to say it disturbed me a bit. This rumor, urban myth or just plain bad press, pops up about the chiropractic adjustment every few years. The simple answer is that chiropractic adjustments can not cause permanent damage, and it's significantly safer than most other forms of health care. Over 20 million people receive either chiropractic and osteopathic manipulations, and the incidents of serious side effects are “very low.”
When talking to the general public, I will inevitably be asked how do you know you're not going to break a neck? Well, I have studied martial arts for about half of my life, and there is no way that the chiropractic adjustment can break a neck, baring any major underlying pathology.
There are a few simple facts about the safety of chiropractic. First, insurance companies spend a lot of money researching the danger of an event or activity. If events and activities that carry more risk, much more must be spent on t...
It has been ridiculously cold this winter here in Texas and across the south. So I have craved a hearty winter pot roast. This was great on a Sunday evening and easy. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
Note you can either use a crockpot or Dutch oven for this recipe
Melt 1 tbs. of the ghee over high in the Dutch oven or a heavy-bottomed skillet if using the crock-pot. Sear off the roast on all sides in the ghee. Once it's seared remove to the side. In the same pan reduce the heat to medium and add the remaining ghee, leeks, celery, carrots, and sauté until soft. Add the tomato paste and garlic sautéing for an addit...
There are numerous studies that link ADD/ ADHD and gluten. In fact, there is one study that links celiac and ADHD. So it might just be that the avoidance of all grains containing gluten is essential for the natural maintenance of ADHD.
It has been my experience that the removal of all grains does matter because there are no “safe” grains in this country. There are two reasons why I say that. First, I don’t trust the cross contamination potentials of the non-gluten free and the gluten free grains. They are normally transported, processed, and stored in the same plants and containers that have or had gluten-containing grains in them.
Second, and more importantly, it’s probably not just the gluten that is causing the problem. The real troublemaker for anyone that is sensitive to gluten is gliadin. Gliadin is a portion of the gluten protein, but it is also found in other grains; like buckwheat, bulgur, wheat, rye, oat, barley, and oatmeal.
Gliadin is the main protein that causes...
Let just start by saying in no way do I think that fudge or anything resembling fudge is paleo. I do think we can "paleo-fy" some treats and use them from time to time on very special occasions. If you take a dogmatic view on the paleo diet and say if a caveman didn't eat it a modern and you're not going to even think about eating it; then this post isn't for you.
Since today is Valentines day, more than likely that you are going to have some form of sweet dessert tonight; I thought that it might be a good idea to post a paleo friendly fudge recipe as a potential treat option.
Erin and I did our Valentine's dinner last week but I wanted to surprise Erin with some flowers and some paleo friendly fudge, she has talked about the last few days. So last night when she was out I whipped up this recipe. Now I don't bake or make sweets, it's something I have just never tried. Besides that its normally Erin's department, and she is a heck of a lot better at it than I am! This recipe was...
Welcome to this Thursday version of my Wednesday Q & A, sorry I didn't get this up yesterday, but I felt this was an important question that I didn't want overshadowing by our great ADHD webinar last night.
I was shocked when I got this question from a patient not too long ago. They showed me a letter they received from the Plano Independent School District, that stated:
“Dear Plano ISD parent, I want to make you aware of some additional immunizations that will be required for the 2014 school year The changes will amend 25 Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 97, Subchapter B, 97.61; 97.63-97.72. Following are immunizations that will be affected:
