A patient recently told me that they hated traveling, especially around the holidays and asked if there was any homeopathy that they could take to help with their travel-induced anxiety.
The good news is that homeopathy can work amazing well on a first-aid basis while traveling.
First, what is homeopathy?
The great power of homeopathy is in its ability to stimulate the inborn ability of your body to heal itself. The homeopathic remedy is given based on what homeopaths call the “Law of Similars”, where a substance taken in excess causes symptoms in a healthy person.
The same remedy will cure those same symptoms in a sick person when given in dilution. This can sound a bit foreign at first, but it is a similar thought process to the vaccine theory. Since homeopathy works off a set of symptoms and each remedy produces a very unique but often overlapping set of symptoms, picking the correct remedy can be very challenging.
You should consult with a well-trained homeopathic physician in order to get the best results. That being said, here are a few tables of some of the most common travel remedies and symptoms that they can help you deal with. One of the most common things I hear is that people hate flying or driving in heavy traffic during the holidays.
This anxiety or fear can be helped by:
Remedy | Symptoms | Dose |
Argentum Nitricum 30C or 200C | Claustrophobia or fear of heights. Fidgety apprehension and restlessness before travel. | Take at first sign of anxiety and can one does every 2-4 hours as needed |
Aconite 30C or 200C | Panic with fear of flying death or accidents | Can take at first sign of panic and every 1-2 hours before and during flight |
Gelsemium 30C or 200C | Quiet Anxiety before travel with weakness trembling or bowl disruptions | Same as Argentum |
Argentum and Aconite are great travel remedies for flight and Gelsemium is great when you are driving especially if you don’t trust yourself or the person that is driving.
If you are traveling across different time zones then you will want to pack:
Remedy | Symptoms | Dosage |
Cocculus 30c | Insomnia despite fatigue, changes in sleep patterns, disorientation | Twice daily for up to 2 to 3 days after |
Arnica 30c | Brain foggy, in shock, and/or muscles are achy | Take every 4 hours for a day or two |
Nux vomica 30c | Flight hangover, tired and irritable, may feel chilly, queasy, headachy | Same as Arnica |
If you tend to get nauseous during travel by car, flight or if you are taking a cruise for the holiday you might consider the following:
Remedy | Symptoms | Dosage |
Cocculus 30c | Nausea; vomiting; dizziness | Before departure, then every 4 hours; if nausea returns take every 2 hours. If no improvement, choose Tabacum or Nux vomica (below); with improvement, stop |
Tabacum 30c | Severe nausea and vomiting with cold sweats and dizziness; wish for fresh air | Take every 1/2 to 2 hours for 3 doses; then only as needed. |
Nux vomica 30c | Sickness that feels like a hangover; wish to vomit but can’t; chills; headache | Same as Tabacum above |
If you are traveling, especially flying, with children please take Chamomilla 200C with you. We have taken TJ and Lilly on 3+ hour flights and have only had one mild melt down with TJ that was quickly settled by Chamomilla and a walk. Your fellow passengers will thank you for bringing this one along. Also, a bottle or pacifier during
Most of these remedies can be picked up at either Whole Foods or Sprouts or any natural grocery store that you have locally.
Hopefully, this little guide helps keep you safe and healthy with your travel this holiday season. I hope you found this week’s Q & A helpful. Please pass it along and, if you have any questions, please send them to [email protected] or comment below.
